In this post I will describe how to share a Xerox 6125 or 6125N printer with a Linux machine through a windows host.

The Xerox 6125 (or 6125N) is an amazing deal - a 300$ network-enabled color laser printer.
Unfortunately, this great price tag comes with one major downside - absolutely no linux compatibility WHATSOEVER.
The Xerox 6125 uses a Host Based PDL and as opposed to most Xerox machines - does not support Postscript or PCL printing languages. Xerox has not released any proprietary drivers for it, and for this reason the Open printing database has categorized it as a paperweight.

There is, however, a way around this - if you have at least one windows machine on your network. By creating a virtual postscript printer, and routing its output to the Xerox 6125 through the windows driver - you can share the printer with any machine capable of printing postscript - namely any major Linux distribution (and mac-os X of course!).

Henrik Schmiediche has written a great guide to setting up a virtual gostscript printer on your windows machine - wich can be found here or mirrored in PDF format here.
Once you have set up your virtual postscript printer, and shared it over the network - set up your linux clients to print to it - either using the same driver as the virtual printer, or the generic “Raw Queue” driver (The HP Color Laserjet 4550 PS suggested in the article works great - make sure you use the postscript version of the driver!).

I’ve recently run into a site called negedhaet.co.il this site calls for the erasable “FriXion” pen from Pilot to be banned in schools. The site links to videos of kids using the pen to cheat in exam appeals, forge medical documents, and modify attendance records. It also links to a petition for banning the pen, and to two relevant Internet forums. After noticing what appeared to be a consumer cation notice for the pen on one of the sites pages (bottom of page) - I became suspicious.

I guessed that the site was a campaign by Pilot trying to utilize the “Streisand effect” to promote the pen - generating great publicity for the product by calling for it to be banned. A quick check on internic.co.il revealed the domain to be owned by Niv Kantor. Another search revealed that Niv Kantor works for McCann Digital - an online advertising firm that touts modern advertising methods…

Looking to confirm this alleged correlation between the advertising agency and the Pilot pen company, I discovered that Y. Berman - the exclusive Israeli importer of pilot pens has indeed engaged into a $250,000 contract with the McCann-Ericksson advertising agency for an online promotion campaign of… the FriXion erasable pen!
Just to be sure, I checked the yellow pages - and indeed - McCann-Ericksson link directly to McCann Digital as their homepage - the trifecta is complete.

I just got a new Lenovo Laptop, the Lenovo 3000 N100 0768-FSG to be exact. I installed SUSE 10.2, and also played around with a Ubuntu 7.04 live cd - neither of which recognized the sound-card. Actually, the sound card was recognized, and configured with the snd-hda-intel driver - but the speakers simply didn’t work, neither did headphones.

I solved this in SUSE 10.2 by manually updating the ALSA drivers from the bundled 1.0.14 version to the 1.0.15rc3 development version - this required manual compilation, and installing my distributions kernel source package. The latest ALSA drivers can be found at www.alsa-project.org.

Instructions for installing the latest ALSA drivers from source can be found here, you will only need the alsa-driver package to get the sound working on your laptop, the rest of the packages should have been bundled with your linux distribution and do not require updating.

There are several sites that report getting the sound to work by adding one of the following lines to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-eapd
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
And then restarting the sound module. Different lines seem to work for different ALSA versions, and different Lenovo 3000 or other intel powered laptop models. so you might want to try some of these before installing the development drivers.

In SUSE this can also be accomplished by running YaST -> Hardware -> Sound, selcting your sound card and clicking “Edit” you will be able to set the mode option to any of the above there.

UPDATE: On open SuSE 10.3, the sound card works out of the box!

Today was the much anticipated 21K race - the peak of the 5th annual Jeonju International Skating Festival.
When we arrived, the atmosphere was amazing. The amount of skaters was incredible, and even more surprising was the fact that nearly all of them had speed boots and skinsuits.

As part of the Foreign group, we got to start at the very front of the pack, alongside the local champions.

I had a great start, and hung on to the pack. After I got comfortable, I started joining in attacks, and improving my position. At first I was shifting around within the first 20 skaters.

As opposed to my competitions at the Worlds - this time I was in a pack of skaters with similar ability to mine, and was able to hold my ground among the leaders. This being the first time I was truly in a high level pack - every second was a valuable lesson.

I learned a lot about how to join the paceline properly, how to prevent people from cutting in front of me, when to rest, when to attack and how to anticipate attacks. Gavin Pullocks advice of using the momentum of a skater pushing you from behind to initiate an attack was especially useful. During the downhill sections the pack would really compress, and if you chose the right moment - you could slingshot out right in to 5th place or so, on the push offs momentum alone.

15 Kilometers into the race, the pack seemed to accelerate (or I might have lost power) and I began to lose it. I tried to catch a few attacking groups and get back in the game, but only ended up zig-zagging along the track and losing more power.

After a minute or so on my own, I fount a “late train” and joined in, keeping the pace, and sometimes leading until the last kilometer, where we all broke out into a sprint.

All and all, it was a great race, and I learned a lot. I think I finished 30th or so, clocking about 36 minutes for the 21K (average speed of nearly 35). Official results are not yet in, but I’ll be sure to update when they are.

After the race, we toured the local expo, and saw the Style-Slalom finals - which were amazing. There was also a friendly slide and jump competition - those guys had moves!

Pictures and videos will come soon.
